Recommended Mobile Apps

These are best for “live” updates, while you are out and about. are a number of useful apps you can download to your cell phone. Bus
schedules are fine, but sometimes busses are delayed or even cancelled.


1. Metro Pulse (Official WMATA App): The most direct source for WMATA bus and rail data. Use the “Nearby” feature to instantly see arrival times for the stops closest to your current location. It includes a trip planner and live chat support for immediate assistance.
2. Google Maps: A reliable “Plan B” if other apps glitch. It features a robust public transit layer that works seamlessly across the DC region and beyond.
3. Apple Maps: Built directly into iPhones, this offers high-quality transit mpas and arrive times comparable to Google Maps. .
4. DC Citymapper: Known for its “Get me Home” feature, this app provides highly detailed step-by-step directions and often accounts for service disruptions more quickly than standard map apps. .

These web-based tools are excellent for mapping out your day from a computer or tablet.

1. WMATA Trip Planner: The gold standard for planning a route. Enter your start and end points to see options for bus-only, metro-only, or combined trips. 2. Bus ETA: A streamlined web tool that shows the live GPS location of your bus. Many riders bookmark this on their phone’s home screen for a quick “where is my bus?” check without opening a heavy app.

Quick Tip:: If you are standing at a bus stop, look for the 7-digit stop ID number on the sign. You can enter this number directly into BusETA or Metro Pulse to see exactly how many minutes away the next three buses are.
